Gifts That Give Back

Gifting for a Cause

Our symbolic charitable donations make the perfect gift for any gifting occasion—birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and “thinking of you” moments.

Charities can create and manage their own virtual gift listings using our Gifts That Give Back (GTGB) tool.

Checklist Before Getting Started

Before creating your first GTGB listing, let’s check that your eBay and PayPal Giving Fund accounts are properly configured.

  • Does your charity have an eBay Seller Account?

If not, create one here.

Yes, your account is a Direct Seller. Great! Let’s get started.

No, it’s not a Direct Seller. To configure your account as a Direct Seller, visit our Direct Selling page.

Managing Your GTGB Listings

Once your eBay account is set up as a Direct Seller, you can then access the GTGB Tool to create and manage your own listings. Please select the appropriate link for your country.

Gift Creator

You can now create your own listings using eBay's Gift Creator. See the detailed steps below.

Step 1. Choose Your Charity

As a Direct Seller for your organisation, you’ve been automatically added to the Gifts that Give Back Gift Creator. If your account has been configured to manage multiple organisations, you’ll see all of them in the “Select a Charity” dropdown.

Select your charity then move to Step 2.

Step 2. Pick Your Gift

You can choose between Fixed Donation or Charitable Auctions. If choosing a Fixed Donation, you’ll need to specify the number of gifts available. The maximum number is 999.

Step 3. Title and Description

Use this section to describe your gift and provide the buyer with a description of the good they are doing in the world by purchasing your organisation’s symbolic gift. Want to see what other organisations have entered?

Step 4: Delivery Method

By choosing Automated Digital Delivery (available in US only), eBay will automatically send a custom Gifts that Give Back email along with the Buyer’s Donation Certificate and Receipt. You also have the option of shipping the certificate and receipt. Some organisations choose to send additional materials along with the certificate and receipt as another way of thanking their supporters. If you choose “Ship the Donation Certificate, Tax Receipt,” you will be provided with the buyer’s address in your eBay Seller’s Hub.

Step 5. Receive Donations

Provide the email address associated with your organisation’s PayPal account. This allows us to perform the proper checks to ensure the funds are routed to your charity. If you don’t know which account is associated with your charitable organisation, please check with your Charity Administrator.

Step 6. Upload a Photo

To finish your GTGB listing, upload an image. This section also provides a checklist to ensure everything has been provided. After uploading your image and all the check marks have turned green, select the “Preview Gift” button to edit your image and finalise your GTGB listing.

Step 7. Finalising Your Listing

This is the final step in preparing your listing for submission. On this screen you’ll find several features for customising the look and feel of your gift certificate. You can crop, flip, and rotate your image, and add copy to appear under the listing’s image. You can also change the template colour on the bottom right. When you are happy with your listing, select the “Submit” button.

Gift Certificate

After a GTGB listing has sold, a gift receipt needs to be provided to your buyer. If you chose to have the gift receipt automatically emailed to the buyer, there is no additional action required on your part. If you selected to ship your items, you can print and ship the Gift Certificate and Donation Receipt. This is a perfect time to include any additional marketing materials. The buyer's address will be provided in your eBay Seller Hub. Need a copy of your Gifts that Give Back Gift Certificate and Donation Receipt?

Donation Receipt

As part of the buyer's purchase process, they have been given the option of receiving a donation receipt that may be used as a tax deduction as determined by their state. We recommend including a Donation Receipt with every purchase. If you selected to have this emailed to the buyer, there’s nothing further you need to do. If you selected to ship items, you can print and send this along with the Gift Certificate.

Gifts That Give Back FAQs

What is Gifts that Give Back?

eBay for Charity Gifts that Give Back is a new feature powered by eBay for Charity. It provides a way for Direct Sellers of charities to raise money and awareness for their charitable causes by selling or auctioning symbolic gifts to buyers.

What is a symbolic gift?

A symbolic gift is a charitable donation that allows the benefitting charity to further their cause and support their mission. Buyers of symbolic gifts will receive a donation certificate symbolizing their gift donation and 100% of the purchase price of your symbolic gift will go directly to the designated charity.

What is a Direct Seller?

A Direct Seller is an employee or authorized agent who is designated to sell “directly” on behalf of a charity. If you would like to become a Direct Seller for your charity, please ask the Charity Administrator who knows the PayPal account login credentials for the eBay for Charity Administration Tool to login and add you as a Direct Seller for their charity.

Now that I am a Direct Seller, how can I create a Gifts that Give Back listing?

It’s easy! Just visit the Gifts that Give Back page and create your Gifts that Give Back listing. For example, you can create a symbolic listing that could help provide food and a bed for your favorite animal shelter. There are many ways to use this feature to help your charity raise money.

How much of the purchase price goes to the benefiting charity?

eBay for Charity waives 100% of all seller fees for anything sold by Direct Sellers of official charity organizations. This means that 100% of the purchase price of the Gifts that Give Back listing will be received by the benefiting charity.

Once I have sold a Gifts that Give Back, how do I print the Donation Certificate and Donation Receipt?

On the Gifts that Give Back page, you’ll find an Active tab with your current listings. Each listing will have a dropdown menu next to the Revise Gift button. From this menu you’ll be able to view and print the donation certificate and tax receipt.

How can I revise my Gifts that Give Back listing?

You can revise your Gifts that Give Back listings by selecting the Revise Gift button on the Gifts that Give Back page. This will take you to the listing editor tool where you can update the listing.
